Kingston Police have warned residents to be on guard after a distraction-based jewelry theft was reported in the city, thewhig.com reports. The suspects — two males and one female travelling in a white vehicle — approached a victim on June 4 shortly before 1 p.m. in the area of Renda Street and Henderson Boulevard.

The victim was gardening in their front yard when the white vehicle pulled up uninvited at the end of the driveway. The three occupants, described as having a darker complexion and possibly of East Indian descent, initially asked for directions.

Once directions were given, the male driver stepped out of the vehicle and placed a gold chain around the victim's neck, stating it was a cultural gesture of gratitude. A female passenger in the rear seat then handed the victim a bag of gold jewelry.

After the vehicle departed, the victim discovered that two gold necklaces they had been wearing were missing — taken by the suspects during the brief interaction.

Kingston Police have issued preventive tips in connection with the incident, urging residents not to accept unsolicited gifts from strangers and to be wary of unexpected approaches at their property.
