Three individuals lost their lives during a violent incident at a Hilton establishment in Montreal's Côte-des-Neiges area on Monday. Among the deceased was a 34-year-old constable who had served with the municipal force since 2021.

The fatal chain of events began when emergency services received a call about an armed person at the hotel. Upon reaching the location, the responding team came under fire.

The young officer, Mohamed Lamine Benredouane, did not survive the confrontation. A second member of the service was hurt but lived. An uninvolved member of the public also perished during the gunfire exchange, as did the alleged perpetrator.

Law enforcement officials recovered a long firearm at the site. Neither the identity of the shooter nor the reason for the attack has been made public.

Multiple blocks surrounding the hotel were sealed off during the operation. People living nearby were told to remain indoors while the dangerous situation unfolded.

Two separate inquiries are now underway. The province's independent oversight agency for police conduct is examining the circumstances, while the provincial force is running its own criminal investigation into the matter.

The city's mayor planned to visit the diverse neighbourhood on Tuesday following the bloodshed.
