Police in Ontario's Peel Region have arrested a former Air Canada pilot who allegedly commanded passenger flights for nearly 17 years without holding the required captain's licence. Geoffrey Wall was taken into custody on 1 June and is facing seven criminal charges.
Investigators say that between 2009 and 2025, the man acted as captain on more than 900 domestic and international flights, carrying tens of thousands of passengers. During that period he reportedly operated Boeing 767, 777 and 787 aircraft. He held only a commercial pilot licence, which does not qualify someone to serve as captain on passenger jets.
The case came to light in 2025 during a routine document check, when irregularities in his qualifications were discovered. Air Canada reported the matter to authorities, and in early 2026 a criminal investigation codenamed "Project Icarus" was launched.
Peel Region's deputy police chief Milinovich compared the situation to a family doctor performing neurosurgery without proper credentials. Detectives believe the suspect deliberately misled both his employer and aviation regulators about his qualifications.
The charges laid include fraud, use of forged documents, and possession of counterfeit markings. Wall ended his employment with the airline in 2025, before the criminal probe began.
The carrier issued a statement stressing that passenger safety was not compromised. It noted that all pilots undergo mandatory training every six months and annual skills testing by Transport Canada-certified examiners. At the same time, the airline acknowledged that holding proper licences is a critical component of aviation safety systems.
Wall has already been fined by Transport Canada. He is scheduled to appear in court on 29 June.
