Quebec oversight body asks public for help after fatal gunfight in Montreal
An independent oversight agency has set up a temporary station in Côte-des-Neiges to collect witness accounts and recordings from a deadly gun battle that unfolded on June 22.
Staff from the Bureau des enquêtes indépendantes will remain at the location until early afternoon to interview anyone who observed the events or filmed them.
The violence began when a man fired a weapon outside a Hilton hotel. Officers from the Montreal police force arrived and engaged in a shootout with him.
Three individuals lost their lives in the exchange: a 34-year-old constable serving with the Montreal force, a 68-year-old passerby, and the armed man himself, a 25-year-old originally from Lethbridge in Alberta. One additional officer was wounded.
Before the attack, the suspect had composed a document expressing animosity toward women and urging violent action.
The Bureau is carrying out an independent examination of the incident, as required whenever a civilian or officer dies or suffers grave harm during a police intervention.
