SIU investigates cyclist injury; two separate Toronto criminal cases unfold

Ontario's police watchdog is examining the arrest of a 21-year-old male cyclist who sustained a serious injury during a Toronto Police traffic stop last Sunday, Toronto Sun Crime reports.

Officers attempted to stop the cyclist at around 6:30 p.m. on Queens Quay W. near Little Norway Park after he allegedly failed to stop at a stop sign. Following an interaction with officers, the man was arrested, ticketed under the Highway Traffic Act, and released. He subsequently sought medical attention at hospital and was diagnosed with a serious, non-life-threatening injury.

The Special Investigations Unit stepped in after being notified by the injured man's lawyer. "The SIU invoked its mandate after it was notified by the affected person's lawyer," the agency said in a statement. Two investigators have been assigned to the case, and SIU investigators are working to obtain body-worn camera footage of the incident. The SIU is asking anyone with information, video, or photos to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529.
