Two men died and several others were wounded when shots erupted at the Salsa on St. Clair festival in Toronto on Saturday evening, forcing organizers to cancel the second day of the annual cultural celebration.

The violence broke out around 7:30 p.m. on July 11, 2026, during the Latin-themed street fair held along St. Clair Avenue West. Police stated that the two deceased individuals appeared to have been targeted and had some connection to one another. No suspects had been taken into custody as of the following day.

According to Deputy Chief Frank Barredo, an estimated 13,000 attendees were present when the gunfire began. Officers recovered two weapons from the scene and were examining at least three separate locations connected to the incident.

Barredo described the event as an exchange of gunfire between individuals who were aiming at each other, while recklessly placing a large crowd in danger. The festival, which has been a fixture in the city's summer calendar for years, celebrates Latin American heritage through food, music, and community gatherings.

Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed horror at the violence, offering condolences to grieving families and support for law enforcement efforts to apprehend those responsible. Mayor Olivia Chow vowed that street festivals would continue despite the tragedy, while urging federal cooperation to stem the flow of illegal firearms across the border.

Police Chief Myron Demkiw noted that shooting incidents in Toronto have dropped by over 26 percent compared to the same period in 2025. However, he acknowledged that such public acts of violence understandably undermine residents' sense of safety.

Festival organizers issued a statement expressing shock and sadness, extending sympathies to victims and their loved ones. A major sponsor, TLN Media Group, threatened to withdraw support unless city officials committed to enhanced security measures for future events.
