A popular summer street celebration in Toronto turned deadly on Saturday evening when gunshots rang out, claiming the lives of two men and causing panic among thousands of visitors.
The incident occurred at the Salsa on St. Clair festival, an annual event celebrating Latin American heritage through music, cuisine and dance. According to law enforcement officials, approximately 13,000 individuals had gathered for the festivities when the violence erupted around 8 p.m.
Toronto police Deputy Chief Frank Barredo confirmed that two males died in the shooting. At least four additional persons sustained injuries from the gunfire. Investigators secured three distinct locations connected to the attack and seized a pair of firearms.
As of the initial report, authorities had not apprehended any suspects in connection with the killings.
City leader Olivia Chow issued a statement denouncing the bloodshed, labelling it an act of reckless brutality that marred what should have been a joyful community occasion.
