According to noovo.info, a Quebec Superior Court judge is to render his verdict on Friday in the trial of Yuesheng Wang, a former Hydro-Québec researcher accused of economic espionage for the benefit of China.

Arrested in 2022, Wang is the first person charged under the Canadian Protection of Information Act for acts of this nature. He allegedly shared without authorisation exclusive research results from Hydro-Québec with Chinese entities.

The Crown also alleges that Wang, while employed at Hydro-Québec, submitted applications to Chinese universities as part of a recruitment programme led by the Beijing government, aimed at repatriating scientists trained abroad.

This Chinese national, domiciled in Candiac on the South Shore, pleaded not guilty. In November, he asserted before the court that he saw nothing reprehensible in his desire to return to China, citing professional dissatisfaction and concerns related to his visa status.
