A tactical officer narrowly escaped injury when a masked man fired at him during a pursuit near Toronto's main airport early Sunday.

A routine observation outside a Brampton eatery escalated into gunfire early Sunday morning, leaving a tactical officer shaken but alive. The encounter began around 3:29 a.m. on Torbram Road, the Toronto Sun reported.

Patrol members had noticed a man wearing a mask stepping out of the Million Dollar Restaurant and summoned the Strategic Tactical Enforcement Policing unit. Constable Miguel Bona approached to question the individual, who responded by scrambling over fences in an effort to get away. After Bona announced his identity as law enforcement, the fugitive allegedly spun around and discharged a handgun repeatedly toward the officer.

At that moment, Constable Tyler Satino pulled up in his patrol vehicle and drove into the shooter, knocking the pistol from his grasp. No shots were fired by police during the incident. Bona then placed the man under arrest.

Authorities recovered a Glock 23 loaded with .40-calibre ammunition. The detained individual, 24-year-old Isaiah Bachoo from Brampton, received hospital treatment for non-critical wounds before being moved to a detention facility.

Bachoo was already barred from owning weapons due to earlier gun-related findings in Thunder Bay during 2023. One prohibition was permanent for restricted arms; another lasted a decade for any firearm. He had also faced accusations in a 2021 shooting, though prosecutors later dropped those counts.

Current charges include intentionally firing a weapon and carrying a loaded prohibited firearm. Crown attorneys are weighing whether to upgrade the accusations. Two officers suffered slight harm and were attended to at the location.

Deputy Chief Marc Andrews of Peel Police commended the personnel for their courage under fire. The charges remain unproven in court.
