Toronto sees wave of shootings leave 12 wounded and 3 dead over July weekend
Between July 10 and 12, Toronto experienced a surge of firearm violence that left twelve people wounded by gunfire and three dead. The attacks unfolded across three distinct locations in the city.
The first incident occurred late Friday around 11 p.m. near Sheppard Avenue and Jane Street West. Officers found 22-year-old Abdihamiim Aden dead from his injuries at the scene. Two additional men in their twenties also suffered bullet wounds and received hospital treatment.
The following day, shots rang out at the Salsa on St. Clair festival around St. Clair and Arlington Avenues. Six attendees were hit by gunfire, with two of them succumbing to their wounds. Organizers called off the remainder of the event.
Later that same evening, authorities responded to the Rebel nightclub on Polson Street in the Portlands district. Three patrons had sustained gunshot injuries there. Officers took five people into custody. During the commotion, another individual was reportedly hit by a car trying to escape and was hospitalized.
Investigators have laid seven serious charges against 25-year-old Omar Abdul Singateh in connection with the nightclub case. The allegations include firing a weapon recklessly, four counts of holding people against their will, and operating a vehicle dangerously. These accusations remain unproven before the courts.
Local politician Mike Colle voiced strong concern about the bloodshed, especially the attack at a community gathering where families were present. He urged the justice system to impose harsher penalties on violent criminals and warned against accepting such events as routine.
All three cases are still under active investigation by Toronto Police.
