Pride crosswalk defaced in Surrey, BC politician takes responsibility

Surrey Pride crosswalk spray-painted, Freedom Party candidate admits involvement

Global News Crime reports that Surrey police launched an investigation after a Pride crosswalk was defaced with black paint and footage of the act was posted on social media.

Officers were called at approximately 3:50 p.m. on Saturday, May 30, to the intersection of Old Yale Road and University Drive near Holland Park, where a small protest was taking place. Three people of interest were identified at the scene.

Although police have not publicly named anyone, Amrit Birring — a candidate with the Freedom Party of BC — claimed responsibility for the act in a video posted on social media after the incident. Birring previously ran for Surrey Newton MLA in 2024, for Surrey mayor in 2022, and for Fleetwood-Port Kells in 2021.

B.C. Attorney General Niki Sharma condemned the vandalism on Monday. "Obviously the news is very disturbing that that kind of vandalism was done here, not far from here," Sharma told Global News. "We condemn that kind of behaviour. I understand that the RCMP and Surrey Police are investigating as a hate crime and we will see what comes out of that investigation, whether that can be made out."
