A father and his two sons will remain behind bars after appellate judges in Cyprus quashed a decision that would have freed them pending trial. The three men face 122 counts tied to alleged violence and mistreatment of children in one household, with incidents said to stretch from 2013 through May 2026.

The higher bench ruled on Monday that the Famagusta district court in Paralimni had misjudged how likely the accused were to flee. The panel found nothing in the trial evidence showing bonds to the island strong enough to counterbalance the severity of the alleged crimes, the prospects of conviction, and the penalties they could face.

Among the charges are physical injury, attempted sexual exploitation, intimidation, and psychological harm. Judges called the accusations grave and pointed to claims that the children endured assaults, beatings, insufficient food, being locked inside, and restrictions on going outdoors.

The appellate court added that letting the men walk free could put witnesses at risk. One of those who came forward already told authorities that a defendant had reached out to them. The possibility of new crimes was also deemed clear, and the judges noted that the absence of prior convictions alone could not erase that concern.

The case is set to go to trial on 16 July.
