Suspect Detained Following Failed Jewellery Store Heist in Larnaca
Officers apprehended a 33-year-old foreign national during the night after an armed hold-up attempt at a jewellery outlet in downtown Larnaca. The 73-year-old proprietor suffered head wounds that required suturing after being struck with a pistol.
As reported by Cyprus Mail, the event unfolded on Monday morning when an individual clad in a black motorbike helmet, dark long-sleeved top and a food courier vest walked into the establishment. The intruder reportedly menaced the senior shopkeeper with a handgun. A scuffle broke out, during which the attacker hit the victim on the skull, inflicting injuries needing stitches.
The elderly owner succeeded in forcing the raider out of the premises before the latter escaped in an automobile waiting nearby. Authorities received notification shortly after 9am.
George Charalambous, head of Larnaca's criminal investigation unit, indicated that detectives found a car matching the getaway vehicle's description at roughly 7pm in a residential block within the city. The detained individual, a non-EU citizen and the car's registered user, stands accused of several offences: plotting a felony, attempted theft, unlawful firearm possession, assault resulting in physical harm, and brandishing a weapon to provoke fear.
A raid on the suspect's dwelling yielded bullets and material tied to the offence. Judicial authorities have also approved an arrest order for another person linked to the same affair.
The accused is due to be brought before Larnaca District Court for a custody ruling.
