Two masked individuals tried to enter a bank branch in Kiti on Friday afternoon but gave up and drove off when the building's access system kept them out.

A pair of hooded men drove up to a Kiti bank branch on Friday afternoon intent on breaking in, but their plan collapsed when the outlet's reinforced entrance would not budge.

The confrontation began just after 14:00, when the duo pulled up in a dark BMW. They emerged holding gym-style bags and walked toward the branch, faces hidden, according to the police account.

George Charalambous, head of the Larnaca criminal-investigation department, said the men were halted by the bank's electronic entry barrier. He told reporters that the suspects reached the doorway yet could not get past it because the mechanism stayed locked.

Within seconds the would-be intruders realised they were beaten, climbed back into the sedan and vanished.

Patrol cars and detectives rushed to the site. The surrounding pavement was taped off while forensic teams combed the location for traces. Officers are now studying surveillance recordings to put names to the figures and locate the getaway car.

Charalambous confirmed that no one was injured and no cash or valuables changed hands.
