Overnight operations across Cyprus led to nine arrests for suspected offences including illegal stay, drug possession, theft from a vehicle and illegal entry.

Nine arrested during island-wide police sweep in Cyprus

Law enforcement officers detained nine individuals during overnight preventive operations carried out across the island, according to a police statement issued on Wednesday.

The individuals taken into custody face accusations ranging from unlawful presence in the Republic to narcotics possession, stealing from a car and entering the country illegally.

Throughout the course of the sweep, police pulled over 455 motor vehicles and verified the identities of 591 people travelling in them. Forty-six buildings were inspected, generating four formal complaints.

Traffic enforcement formed a major part of the effort. Officers issued 260 citations for road violations, with excessive speed accounting for 104 of those cases.

Alcohol screening was performed on 116 motorists, yielding two positive readings. Five drivers were also screened for drug use, with two results coming back positive.

Six vehicles were impounded as inquiries continue.
