Swedish tourists arrested after Turkish Cypriot man severely beaten in Ayia Napa
Four visitors from Sweden are being held by police after a Turkish Cypriot individual was left with grave head trauma following an early-morning incident in Ayia Napa on Sunday. The victim, Ahmet Tan, aged 47, sustained a cracked cranium and internal bleeding in his brain.
On Wednesday, government representative Konstantinos Letymbiotis addressed media speculation about the assault. He clarified that the detained individuals are tourists from Scandinavia, and therefore no ethnic or religious motivation drove the violence. He emphasised that authorities reject all forms of physical aggression and continue to denounce this particular episode.
Letymbiotis further highlighted that harmony between the island's two main communities has been shown to work in daily life. He warned that nobody should weaken this through comments or veiled suggestions.
Regarding the broader political situation, he pointed to current UN-led initiatives and said all public discourse ought to help rather than hinder the atmosphere the Secretary-General is working to build.
Tan was admitted to the main hospital in the capital. On Monday night, the Turkish Cypriot side's health official, Hakan Dincyurek, saw him there. Dincyurek disclosed that two successive neurological operations had already been performed. During his visit, the patient was still in the critical-care unit and his survival remained uncertain.
The Scandinavian suspects have been placed in pre-trial detention. Their next judicial hearing is set for the coming Tuesday.
