Fraudulent calls plague residents in Cyprus
Telephone fraud has been escalating in Cyprus for months, according to a report by the Cyprus Mail.
One local resident stated that he filed reports about suspicious calls on two occasions — first with the police and then with his mobile operator. In the latest incident, a caller using an American accent informed his wife that an outstanding speeding fine and an active arrest warrant had been filed against her. The calls originate from numbers with Cyprus prefixes, yet investigators believe these are prepaid lines that remain difficult to trace.
The case follows recent reports of an elderly victim who surrendered a substantial sum to a fraudster. It remains unclear whether any perpetrators have been apprehended.
