A 27-year-old resident of Paphos has told police she was tricked into handing over twelve thousand US dollars to fraudsters operating through a social media platform.

The complainant visited a police station on Thursday to file her report. She explained that she had posted in an online chat group asking for guidance on buying and selling digital currencies. Several people she did not know replied, offering to assist her. Over the course of their exchanges, she transferred money to them. When the cash never reached her bank account as promised, she realized something was wrong and went to the authorities.

The Cyprus Mail reports that officers have begun looking into the incident. The inquiry is still at an early stage, and no suspects have been taken into custody so far.

This incident is part of a broader pattern of online scams targeting people interested in virtual currencies. Law enforcement agencies on the island have issued multiple public warnings about strangers making financial promises through social networks.
