A resident reported an email scam where fraudsters posed as the tax department to trick recipients into handing over personal data via a counterfeit website.

The complainant received a message claiming to come from the tax authority. It stated that a refund had been authorised and even cited a purported amount. To receive it, the target was told to follow a link and confirm their identity by entering sensitive details.

The hyperlink directed to a bogus page mimicking the tax department's genuine site. The alert citizen spotted the ruse and reported it to officers without revealing any information.

The case adds to a growing pattern of phishing attempts on the island. Investigators from the economic crime unit are looking into the matter.

Law enforcement repeated its warning that state bodies never ask for passwords or account details by email. Anyone who gets such a request should erase it at once. People should also avoid submitting data on unofficial sites and should verify any unexpected message by phoning the department directly.

Those who have already given financial information to scammers should inform their bank immediately and then file a police report.
