Five people were shot dead on Monday at a youth welfare facility on Dankersstrasse in Stade, a town of roughly 50,000 residents located about 40 kilometres from Hamburg, jamaica-gleaner.com reports, citing German police.

Two suspects were taken into custody at the scene, one of whom is believed to have fired the shots. Police did not specify how many others were wounded in the attack, but confirmed additional casualties.

The facility on Dankersstrasse, south of the town centre, provides temporary accommodation for pregnant women and young mothers with children. Authorities stated there was no ongoing danger to the public following the arrests.

Video footage from the scene showed a heavy police presence, alongside emergency personnel and multiple ambulances deployed on the residential street.

Vitali Mertens, a resident living across the street, said he heard gunshots before the area was immediately cordoned off. "The police sent me away," he told reporters.

Investigators said they were working to establish the full circumstances of the shooting and the motive behind it.

Gun laws in Germany are considerably more restrictive than in the United States, and incidents of mass shootings, while rare, have occurred previously. Police confirmed the investigation remained active.
