Arrest of second businessman convicted in Saweto case
Google News PE — Crime reports the arrest of the second businessman judicially convicted of the murder of environmental defenders in the Saweto case, one of the most emblematic criminal proceedings concerning crimes against indigenous leaders in Peru.
The Saweto case is linked to the murder of Edwin Chota and three other indigenous leaders from the Asháninka community, who were defending their territories against illegal logging in the Ucayali region. The conviction had been handed down previously, but the businessman had remained at large until his recent arrest.
With this capture, Peruvian authorities have completed the arrest of the two businessmen sanctioned by the court in the framework of the same judicial proceeding. The whereabouts of the first convicted person had been established previously, while the second managed to evade law enforcement for an extended period before being located and arrested.
