A court specialised in organised crime offences ruled in favour of seizing a light aircraft that was part of a regional-scale drug trafficking operation. The ruling benefits the Paraguayan state, which now takes possession of the aircraft.
The request came from the prosecutor handling anti-drug cases in Alto Paraná, Elvio Aguilera. The aircraft, identified as a Cessna 206 with registration number CP-2038, formed part of a criminal structure that moved narcotics across three borders.
The judges based their decision on local legislation that provides for the forfeiture of ownership of means of transport used to commit drug-related offences. In this way, the law allows the government to seize assets used in such activities.
Previously, the two men on board had already been sentenced for their roles in the scheme. The man piloting the aircraft, a 36-year-old Bolivian citizen named Lucio Alfonzo Paz Fernández, was sentenced to 14 years' imprisonment. His companion, a 53-year-old Peruvian identified as Elmer Enrique Figueroa Paredes, received a sentence of 13 years. The justice system found them guilty of trafficking in prohibited substances on a transnational basis.
The story goes back to 29 January 2023, when officers intervened in a rural area near Hernandarias, known as Gleba 11. There they discovered the aircraft with almost 265 kilogrammes of cocaine divided into packages. The aircraft was on Paraguayan soil refuelling, heading towards Brazilian territory.
