The family of Elizabeth "Liz" Waddell, a North Carolina woman who vanished while visiting Grenada, left the island on Friday, according to a statement from her husband Cailen Waddell reported by abc7ny.com.

"We have done what we can here, and the investigation will continue," Cailen Waddell said in the statement. The family had been on the island conducting an active search alongside local authorities, volunteers and friends.

Liz Waddell was last seen swimming near Grand Anse Beach at approximately 5:30 p.m. on July 22. Her husband said she had expressed confidence in her swimming ability and commented on the beauty of the island shortly before she disappeared.

Earlier in the week, Cailen Waddell said that days of searching had produced no trace of his wife. Following consultations with family members, local authorities and the U.S. Embassy, he said he did not believe foul play was involved.

"After careful and thoughtful consultation with family, local authorities, the U.S. Embassy, and others here in Grenada, I join authorities in believing there was no foul play," he said in a Wednesday statement.

The missing person investigation remains open. Authorities are continuing to piece together Liz Waddell's movements between the moment she was last captured on video and when she was subsequently spotted in the water.

Cailen Waddell thanked supporters, local authorities, media and the people of Grenada for their assistance during the search effort. He also reflected on his relationship with his wife, noting the couple met in 2003 at the American Dance Festival in Durham.

"I realized this year that Liz and I have been together longer in life than we have been apart," he said.

The family indicated it would provide updates if further information became available.
