The U.S. State Department raised its travel advisory for Grenada to Level 2 — "Exercise Increased Caution" — on 5 January, citing an elevated risk of crime, fox5ny.com reports. The updated warning specifically flags violent crime, noting that American citizens have been victims of armed robbery, assault, burglary and rape.

"In some cases, American citizens have been killed," the advisory states. "Police response times are not as fast as one may expect in the United States."

The advisory instructs travellers not to open their hotel or residence door unless they can confirm the identity of the visitor. Officials also urge visitors to avoid physically resisting any robbery attempt, maintain a low profile, exercise caution when walking or driving at night and remain aware of their surroundings at all times.

Grenada is an eastern Caribbean island nation situated roughly 125 miles north of Venezuela. The U.S. Embassy is located in the capital, St. George's, the island's largest city.

The State Department's Bureau of Diplomatic Security noted that regional police forces do generally cooperate with U.S. counterparts. However, the bureau's Grenada report acknowledged that "response time to law enforcement and security requests can at times be quite slow due to inadequate funding, lack of equipment and training, and staffing shortages."

Tourism is a significant driver of regional economies, and governments do provide a degree of police protection in tourist areas, the same report noted. According to the Caribbean Tourism Organization, approximately 16.8 million Americans visited the Caribbean in 2024.

The State Department operates four advisory tiers: Level 1 (Exercise Normal Precautions), Level 2 (Exercise Increased Caution), Level 3 (Reconsider Travel) and Level 4 (Do Not Travel). Grenada's upgrade to Level 2 places it in the second-highest category of concern short of an outright travel warning.
