A joint strike by Gardaí and customs officials has netted narcotics worth more than €2 million, concealed inside vape products and sweets sold through retail outlets.

Personnel from the Garda National Drugs & Organised Crime Bureau teamed up with Revenue's Customs Service and local drug squads in Longford, Mayo, Roscommon, Kildare, and Drogheda for the enforcement push.

The crackdown unfolded on 2 July and 8 July 2026, when teams searched five commercial properties and two houses in Castlebar, Longford, Drogheda, and Carlow. These locations had been pinpointed as part of an ongoing probe into organised crime under Operation Tara.

Inside, officers found substantial batches of jelly sweets laced with cannabis, vaping liquids containing cannabis oil, and cigarettes laced with HHC and THC. The combined value of the confiscated items tops €2 million.

Two males in their 30s were detained at Midlands Garda stations under Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act 1996. One has since been freed pending further investigation, with a prosecution file being prepared for the DPP.

The seized material will undergo analysis at Forensic Science Ireland.
