The detentions were made under Operation Táirge, a scheme established in 2023 to tackle retail theft on a national scale. The approach relies on intelligence gathering to pinpoint offenders, collaborates with stores to bolster security, targets underground markets, and assists vulnerable retailers with prevention and prosecution.

Organised shoplifting typically sees groups working together to lift goods from outlets before selling them through illicit channels. Refund scams are another widespread tactic, where ringleaders enlist others to steal products that are later returned for money.

In recent months, criminal outfits and lone actors have hit shopping centres in Dundrum, Blackrock, and Dún Laoghaire, taking high-value products. Soaring meat prices have also turned this product into a prime target, causing headaches for local grocers.

At the start of May, An Garda Síochána set up a specialist squad to tackle the surge. Suspects have been tracked down through behavioural profiling, coordination between divisions, and review of security camera and monitoring material.

The force says the inquiry is still live, with a fresh wave of activity planned for the near future.
