A 42-year-old man is accused of assaulting his partner in her Cork city apartment in April 2020, allegedly pulling her from bed by the hair and smashing her face into furniture.

A 42-year-old man has been kept in detention after appearing before a judge over claims he attacked his partner at her Cork city flat more than five years ago.

The alleged incident took place on April 13, 2020. Garda testimony indicated the pair had eaten together and consumed alcohol that night. The woman stated that after one in the morning, the man's mood soured and he became upset. She retired to sleep while he remained in the kitchen area.

According to her account, she was roused when her boyfriend began hauling her out of bed by her hair. She claims he banged her head against a wooden closet and then slammed her face into a bedside cabinet before departing the property. Police were subsequently summoned.

The victim was discovered with blood coming from her scalp and discoloration on her face. A doctor's report listed extensive injuries: soft-tissue harm to her head, face, arms and midsection; contusions near her left eye and across the nose; marks beneath her right armpit and on both upper limbs; scrapes on her right shoulder; a raised red area on her left chest; and a gash on the scalp. The hearing was told she appeared deeply upset.

Sergeant John Kelleher presented the prosecution's evidence. The defendant had been picked up on an active bench warrant. He consented to staying behind bars for four weeks, the longest stretch allowed with personal agreement.

Judge Miriam Walsh recorded the consent and put the case back to July 16. Prosecutors are still waiting for guidance from the Director of Public Prosecutions. The suspect had previously been refused release on bail.

The court offered no justification for the significant gap between the alleged offence and the court appearance.
