A former American soldier accused of killing a County Kerry sheep farmer will stand trial at the Central Criminal Court in Dublin in January, with nearly 200 witnesses expected to give evidence.

Rory McGrath, who served in the US military, is charged with murdering 55-year-old Mike Gaine, a sheep farmer from the Listowel area, on a date unknown between July 30 and August 1, 2022.

At a hearing before the Central Criminal Court, prosecuting counsel confirmed that approximately 190 witnesses are set to be called during the nine-week proceedings, which are scheduled to begin on January 12. The case will be heard before a jury.

McGrath has been remanded in custody since his arrest. He appeared before the court via video link from Cloverhill Prison. Defence counsel indicated they would be seeking certain disclosure before the trial begins.

Mr Gaine, a well-known figure in north Kerry farming circles, was found dead at his rural home. The killing shocked the tight-knit community in the Listowel area, where he had lived and worked all his life.
