A major altercation broke out at St Peter and Paul's burial ground in Portlaoise, County Laois, during the yearly graveside blessing on the final Sunday of May. The confrontation left two individuals wounded and led to four arrests.

As reported by Extra.ie, a male in his forties and a young male required medical care at hospital for wounds that did not endanger their lives. Law enforcement has since prosecuted four suspects — two grown men and two underage males — for possessing offensive weapons and engaging in violent disorder. Witnesses indicated that blades of different kinds were drawn during the melee.

Over three thousand worshippers had assembled for the customary religious observance when the violence flared. Officers from the Public Order Unit were on site along with numerous other gardaí. A minor scuffle had already taken place during the same event twelve months earlier.

Local representative Caroline Dwane Stanley, who sits on the cemetery board, called the episode horrifying. She recounted how senior citizens and youngsters ran in panic, weeping from distress. The independent councillor warned that the disturbance now casts uncertainty over whether the yearly ceremony can be held going forward.

Authorities are urging members of the public who saw anything or possess relevant details to reach out to investigators handling the case.
