A woman in her 50s received hospital treatment after an alleged assault in Dublin 2 during the early hours, with gardaí sealing off parts of the area for forensic examination.

A woman in her 50s needed medical care after an alleged attack took place on Exchequer Street in Dublin 2 at around 4.40am.

Emergency services and gardaí attended the scene following reports of the incident. The victim was transported to St James's Hospital. Officials indicated her wounds were not believed to endanger her life.

Several spots near Grafton Street were cordoned off this morning to allow forensic teams to examine the area. Blood could be seen at a shopfront, with additional traces spotted at intervals along the road.

Early reports suggest the attacker did not use a weapon. The probe into what happened is continuing.

At a media briefing later, Justice Minister Jim O'Callaghan addressed questions about safety in the capital. He argued that a metropolis with more than a million residents will inevitably see some criminal acts. He cited the introduction of more visible patrols and rising garda recruitment as steps designed to make people feel more secure.
