A 52-year-old with Algerian roots who holds Irish citizenship has been found guilty of attempting to kill three young children in a stabbing incident in the capital.

A 52-year-old man with no fixed address has been convicted of attempting to murder three primary-school-aged children during a knife rampage on Parnell Square East in Dublin.

The defendant, who was born in Algeria but later acquired Irish citizenship, was found guilty of trying to kill a five-year-old girl who received a wound to the heart, along with a boy of the same age and a six-year-old girl. The jury also convicted him of harming two additional infants aged five and six, attacking a French adolescent who tried to stop him, and carrying a 36cm blade.

He had pleaded not guilty to all eight counts following the events of November 23rd, 2023.

The female victim who was stabbed near the heart, now seven, faces lifelong disability. Medical evidence showed her brain went without oxygen for roughly 40 minutes. She is now unable to speak, relies on a wheelchair, communicates only through eye movement, and receives nutrition via a gastric tube because she cannot swallow.

During the proceedings, which lasted three weeks, a childcare assistant named Leanne Flynn was commended for placing herself between the attacker and the minors. Flynn suffered deep wounds to her back that affected multiple organs including her spleen, diaphragm, stomach and lungs. Doctors had to remove her spleen to save her. She was put into a medically induced coma and required two urgent operations. She has not resumed employment.

Mary Lou McDonald, leader of Sinn Féin, stated that Flynn deserves official commendation from the authorities, calling her "an absolute hero." McDonald, who arrived near the location shortly afterwards, recalled the atmosphere of terror and anguish.

Later that evening, public disorder erupted in central Dublin. Rioters torched cars and a tram, and several retail premises were ransacked.
