A resident of County Clare has been handed a six-month custodial term following a conviction for fraud involving concert passes in County Waterford.

Aaron Moran, aged 37 and living on Parnell Street in Ennis, stood before Waterford District Court. The presiding judicial officer, Judge Kevin Staunton, dealt with a matter dating to 7 September 2023, when Moran allegedly took payment for entertainment passes he never delivered.

A woman residing in Tramore paid €130 for a pair of passes. She neither received admission to the event nor got her funds returned.

The probe into her complaint moved slowly. A member of the national police service who had been handling the file retired, causing a fifteen-month gap between the initial report and the taking of an official statement. While the judge called this wait "not good," he ruled it had not harmed the accused's position.

Moran's legal representative, Ken Cunningham, informed the bench that his client had once struggled with compulsive wagering but had since recovered. The defendant also brought restitution for the injured party to the hearing.

The court noted Moran's extensive criminal history, which includes 41 separate entries.

Judge Staunton condemned the scheme as an especially distasteful and increasingly frequent form of dishonesty. He pointed to the accused's repeat conduct as evidence of an established practice rather than an isolated mistake, remarking that Moran was far from inexperienced in such matters.

The sentence of six months was imposed immediately. Should Moran wish to challenge the outcome, he may do so upon lodging a personal surety of €500.
