A 42-year-old from Upper Aghada will face trial at Ireland's highest criminal court for allegedly killing a Ukrainian man in Cork last March.

Prosecutors have directed that a 42-year-old County Cork resident be tried at the Central Criminal Court on a homicide charge stemming from a knife incident in Cork City last year.

Jonathan Hennessy, residing at Dr Patrick O’Sullivan Terrace in Upper Aghada, stands accused of unlawfully causing the death of Oleksandr Zhyvytskyi on 16 March 2023 at Knapp’s Square. The Ukrainian national, a parent in his early thirties, reportedly stepped out from his apartment at Camden Court on Carroll’s Quay to purchase a meal when a confrontation occurred shortly before 8pm.

According to earlier evidence, the injured man sustained a blade wound to the torso and managed to return to his flat, where his partner summoned assistance. Medical personnel attended but were unable to revive him; he was declared deceased at 8:35pm.

At a recent hearing in Cork District Court, Sergeant Aisling Murphy informed the bench that the Director of Public Prosecutions had issued instructions for the case to proceed to the superior court. The prosecution also agreed that any admission of guilt could be formally recorded at district level before sentencing takes place at the higher tribunal.

Defence solicitor Eddie Burke requested the compilation of a book of evidence, which the State must prepare within six weeks of the directions being given. Because the accused would agree only to a fortnight’s further detention rather than the four weeks sought, the matter was put back until 1 July, when he is expected to remain in custody.

Detectives opened an inquiry immediately after the incident.
