Regency Hotel getaway drivers lose appeal to cut prison sentences
Two men who drove getaway vehicles during the fatal shooting at Dublin's Regency Hotel in 2016 have had their appeals against sentence dismissed, with the Court of Appeal ruling that their involvement was "far from peripheral."
The attack, carried out during a weigh-in event for a boxing match, resulted in the murder of Kinahan Cartel member David Byrne. The gunmen, some disguised in garda-style tactical gear and others as SWAT team members, stormed the hotel and opened fire.
The getaway drivers had sought reductions in their prison terms, arguing that their roles were minor. However, the three-judge appeal court rejected this contention, finding that their participation in the carefully planned operation was substantial enough to warrant the sentences originally imposed.
The Regency Hotel assault remains one of the most significant gangland killings in recent Irish history and marked a major escalation in the deadly feud between the Kinahan and Hutch criminal organisations.
