Supreme Court clears way for trial of historical sexual assault claims against late solicitor

Ireland's highest court has given the green light for a civil action alleging historical sexual abuse by a deceased former head of the Law Society to move to trial.

On Thursday, the Supreme Court affirmed a ruling from the Court of Appeal last year. The appellate judges had decided that claims brought by the son of Walter Beatty snr could proceed despite the accused having died in 2024.

Beatty was a senior partner at the firm Vincent and Beatty and also held investments in the hotel sector. He once served as president of the Law Society, the professional body representing solicitors in Ireland.

The judgment means the case will now be heard on its merits in the lower courts.
