Teenager testifies garda father used physical punishment and controlled her eating and weight
A 17-year-old girl has given evidence that her childhood was marked by threats of violence at mealtimes, forced outdoor confinement, and intense scrutiny of her body weight by her father, a serving member of An Garda Síochána.
The teenager was testifying in the Central Criminal Court trial of the 48-year-old man, who faces accusations of cruelty toward both her and her 24-year-old sister. He also denies sexually assaulting his wife on two occasions, in 2009 and 2021, and causing harm to his eldest daughter.
Legal anonymity protects all individuals involved. The family resided in two properties in Ireland's north-west during the periods in question.
In a recorded statement to police from late 2024, made when she was 15, the minor detailed a pattern of harsh treatment beginning when she was in early primary school. She recounted how her father would place tree branches on the table during dinner and warn that failure to clear one's plate would result in beatings. Similar threats involved kitchen implements, she said.
One memory she shared concerned an accident when she was nine: a younger sibling's fingers were caught in a closing door. Rather than accept it was unintentional, the accused allegedly forced the witness to experience the same pain by pressing her hand in the doorframe, then gave her the silent treatment for days.
The complainant also described an episode where a refusal to do household chores led to a remote control being hurled at her shoulder, leaving her terrified. She began trying to leave the house whenever her mother went out so she would not be left alone with him.
In autumn 2023, she claimed, an argument about brushing her hair before school ended with her father striking her skull with the brush itself. He later defended the blow by saying she had looked unkempt.
Beyond physical incidents, the witness described psychological pressure around her appearance from her early teens. After she initially shed some pounds, she said, every conversation with her father revolved around fitness and dieting. He allegedly displayed before-and-after images of her to outsiders without asking, and warned that her future would suffer if she did not maintain her figure.
Summers between ages six and ten were spent entirely in the garden, she told investigators, with meals passed through windows. She had to plead for permission to enter the house to relieve herself.
Other allegations included a 2021 incident where the accused allegedly gripped her throat while pretending to play, only releasing her when she clawed at him. Early this year, she said, she saw her older sibling pulling their father away from a younger sister after he had reportedly done the same to the smaller child.
Under questioning by John McGowan SC for the defence, the witness confirmed she had received counselling and kept a personal diary. She accepted that some entries had not come up during her police interview, explaining that she had felt anxious during the process.
The proceedings are ongoing.
