A motorist was taken into custody after attempting to evade a roadside screening operation in the Roscommon area.

Personnel from the Roscommon and Longford Roads Policing Units were carrying out a Mandatory Intoxicant Test operation in cooperation with several agencies, including the Road Safety Authority, Revenue officials, the County Council, and social welfare representatives. During the operation, officers noticed a vehicle reversing direction to avoid the stop.

The car was intercepted on a minor road. Checks revealed the vehicle had been operating without a current National Car Test certification for half a decade.

Following a roadside oral fluid examination, the operator tested positive for cannabis. They were placed under arrest and are expected to appear before a court.
