Eight individuals — five men and three women — are facing court appearances following a coordinated Garda sweep targeting an organised crime network with connections outside Ireland.

The first wave of arrests took place on Tuesday evening, when officers from the Garda National Drugs & Organised Crime Bureau apprehended four suspects in Cork, Laois and Carlow. The detainees included three females aged between their 30s and 40s, plus a male in his 30s. After being charged, they were brought before judicial sittings in Carlow, Tullamore and Fermoy.

A second round of detentions occurred early Wednesday, with four additional males taken into custody — three in their 40s and one in his 30s. These individuals are expected to appear before judges at the Criminal Courts of Justice in Dublin, as well as at Thurles and Carlow district courts, in relation to the same case.

The criminal organisation at the centre of this inquiry maintains links with illicit actors abroad, according to a statement issued by An Garda Síochána. Officers have been pursuing the group since November 2024, seeking to break up its operations, prevent its growth, and bring its Irish-based participants before the courts.

As BreakingNews.ie reported, the latest detentions build on earlier arrests carried out between February and April this year. The entire effort falls under Operation Tara, the nationwide drive against drug distribution and trafficking that supplies resources and coordination for enforcement actions across the force.

TheJournal.ie noted that Operation Tara functions as a broad classification within the Gardaí, covering confiscations, searches and other operational measures aimed at curbing narcotics-related offending throughout the country.
