A 49-year-old man will be tried at Cork District Court after prosecutors ruled the case does not need to go to a higher court.

He is accused of assaulting his former girlfriend with a small screwdriver during an incident on the morning of Wednesday, April 8. Officers were called to the woman's home around 10:20 a.m. following a report of a domestic disturbance.

According to the complainant, the man came to her house asking for his bank card. She went outside to talk to him, at which point he allegedly pulled out a compact screwdriver with a black grip and struck her left arm with it.

The woman suffered a cut but reportedly did not need medical treatment.

He is charged with assault causing harm and violating a safety order issued under domestic-violence legislation.

During a closed hearing at Cork District Court, the judge said he wanted to examine a doctor's report on the victim's injuries before agreeing to hear the matter. Proceedings were put back until July 16.

The defendant had earlier been denied bail. Because the case involves an alleged domestic-violence offence, the identities of those involved are protected from publication.
