Cork man to face district-court trial over alleged screwdriver assault on former partner
A 49-year-old man from Cork is set to be tried at district-court level for allegedly injuring his former girlfriend with a small screwdriver and violating a domestic-violence safety order.
The Director of Public Prosecutions has directed that the case can remain in the lower court. However, Judge David Waters, presiding over a closed hearing at Cork District Court, said he wished to review a medical report on the victim before formally accepting jurisdiction. The matter was put back until 16 July for that document to be produced.
Details of the incident were previously aired during a bail hearing at the same court, as reported by Echo Live.
Gardaí were called to a residence shortly after 10 a.m. on Wednesday, 8 April, following a report of a domestic disturbance. The woman told officers that the accused had come to her door asking for his bank card. She went outside to talk to him, at which point he is said to have pulled out a compact screwdriver with a black grip and struck her in the left arm.
The wound was a cut that did not need medical attention.
The defendant is charged with assault causing harm and with contravening a safety order issued under the Domestic Violence Act. He was earlier denied bail on both counts.
Because the charges include an alleged breach of a safety order, reporting restrictions apply and the parties cannot be named.
