Cork Man Accused of Screwdriver Attack on Ex-Partner to Face District Court Trial
A 49-year-old man charged with attacking his former girlfriend using a small screwdriver is expected to be heard at district court level in Cork, following a decision by the Director of Public Prosecutions.
The alleged assault took place on the morning of 8 April, when officers received a call about a domestic incident just after 10:20am. Gardaí arrived and spoke with the woman involved.
According to her account, the accused came to her residence seeking his bank card. She went outside to talk to him, at which point she said he pulled out a compact screwdriver with a dark handle and struck her left arm with it.
The victim suffered a laceration but did not need hospital care. The defendant faces charges of assault causing harm and violating a protection order issued under domestic violence legislation.
He had earlier been denied bail at the same court. The case returned this week for a closed hearing, with reporting restrictions in place because the charges include an alleged breach of a safety order.
Judge David Waters requested a medical report on the complainant before agreeing to handle the matter at district level. Proceedings were put back to 16 July to allow for this document.
