A man in his forties faces charges after allegedly attacking his ex-partner with a small screwdriver during a domestic dispute in Cork.

A man aged 49 will stand trial at Cork District Court over claims he wounded his former partner using a small screwdriver during an alleged domestic confrontation.

The matter was heard behind closed doors at the district court, as the charges include an alleged violation of a protection order issued under domestic violence legislation. Judge David Waters requested documentation from a doctor regarding the victim's injuries before agreeing to hear the case at that level. The hearing was put back until mid-July.

Gardaí were called out on the morning of 8 April following reports of a disturbance at a private address. Upon arrival, officers took a statement from the woman involved.

She told investigators that the accused came to her property seeking a bank card. She went outside to speak with him, at which point he allegedly produced a compact screwdriver with a dark handle and struck her upper limb.

The complainant suffered a laceration but declined hospital treatment, according to evidence previously presented.

The defendant, who was taken into custody and later denied bail, is charged with causing injury through assault and violating an existing safety order.
