Cork man charged with screwdriver attack on former partner to be tried at district level

A 49-year-old accused of injuring his former girlfriend with a screwdriver will have his case heard in the district court, prosecutors have decided.

The ruling came during a closed hearing at Cork District Court, where the man faces counts of assault causing harm and violating a protection order issued under domestic-violence legislation. Names were withheld because of the domestic-violence aspect.

Judge David Waters, however, declined to finalise jurisdiction until he receives a medical report on the woman's injuries. The matter was put back to 16 July.

The defendant had earlier been denied bail on the same charges.

Court documents from the earlier hearing state that gardaí were called to a reported domestic disturbance on 8 April at 10:20am. The woman told officers her former boyfriend came to her house asking for his bank card. She went outside to talk, she said, and he allegedly pulled out a small black-handled screwdriver and struck her left arm.

She suffered a laceration but was not treated by medics.
