Wicklow-Wexford TD Malcolm Byrne was arrested on suspicion of drink driving in Dublin city centre in the early hours of Thursday morning, irishexaminer.com reports.

Gardaí stopped Byrne at a mandatory checkpoint at around 5am. He failed a roadside breathalyser test and was subsequently taken to a nearby garda station to provide a urine sample. Results from that sample are not yet available.

In a statement, Byrne said he had been travelling to Dublin Airport when he was stopped close to his hotel.

"I was subsequently arrested on suspicion of drink-driving. I am cooperating fully with An Garda Síochána. As the matter is ongoing, it would not be appropriate for me to comment further at this stage," he said.

Byrne, who has served as both a TD and a Senator, confirmed he informed Fianna Fáil of the matter immediately.

A party spokesperson said Fianna Fáil would consider "any developments" in relation to the matter. "As this is an ongoing investigation and Deputy Byrne is cooperating fully with An Garda Síochána, it would not be appropriate to comment further at this time," the spokesperson added.
