A Dundalk court imposed a six-year custodial term on a 28-year-old Donegal man who previously wore the uniform after he admitted killing a pedestrian while behind the wheel and then driving away, The Journal.ie reported.

Michael Ball, hailing from Middletown in Malin Head, was given a seven-year stretch with the concluding 12 months set aside. He must also serve a 12-year road ban.

Ball had been attached to the Drogheda station before stepping down from the ranks. The tragedy unfolded on Rathmullen Road in the Louth town on St Patrick's Day 2024.

He owned up to causing the demise of Niall MacEneaney, 45, through reckless motoring. Ball further acknowledged departing the crash site without rendering assistance.

Forensic examination placed the automobile's velocity between 86 and 109 km/h when it struck the victim.

The police watchdog, Fiosrú, issued a statement confirming ongoing engagement between its family support representative and MacEneaney's next of kin. The office is additionally preparing alongside the Coroner's court for a pending inquest examining the circumstances of the death.
