Garda operation nets 41 suspects in south Dublin retail theft crackdown

Forty-one adults are due before Dún Laoghaire District Court on Thursday morning, charged with retail theft and associated offences arising from a targeted Garda campaign, the Irish Times reports.

Operation Táirge, an intelligence-led initiative launched last month, has been targeting organised shoplifting gangs across south Dublin. The operation is run by a specialist unit established within the east division of the Garda's Dublin Metropolitan Region.

The campaign focuses on coordinated retail crime in which groups work together to steal high-value goods — including meat — for resale through the black market. Refund fraud, where stolen items are returned for cash, also falls within its scope.

Gardaí have worked alongside local retailers and business groups across southeast Dublin to identify suspects and build prosecutions. According to the Garda, such criminal activity is typically well-organised, with recruiters directing others to carry out thefts from shops and shopping centres.

Fifteen juvenile suspects have also been identified through the course of the operation. Their cases are being handled separately through the youth diversion programme rather than through the District Court process.
