Gardaí contact Channel 4 News over post claiming Yves Sakila died 'at the hands of police'

Channel 4 News deleted a post on X after gardaí made contact over a clip implying police were responsible for Yves Sakila's death in Dublin.

Gardaí contacted UK broadcaster Channel 4 News at the weekend after a post on its X account implied the force was responsible for the death of Yves Sakila, TheJournal.ie reports.

The post featured a clip of an interview with Mr Sakila's nephew and carried the claim that he had died "at the hands of police in Dublin." It has since been deleted.

Mr Sakila was declared dead at the Mater Hospital on 15 May, shortly after he was restrained by several security personnel outside Arnotts department store on Henry Street, following an alleged shoplifting incident. Video footage of the incident appears to show five men holding him prone on the ground; none of the men were dressed in garda uniform.

Following contact from gardaí, Channel 4 News removed the original post. The interview clip with Mr Sakila's nephew was subsequently re-shared on X with a label reading "correction."

Multiple investigations are now under way into the circumstances surrounding his death. No exact cause of death has yet been established, and no suspects have been identified or detained.

A garda spokesperson declined to comment when contacted by TheJournal.ie. Channel 4 has also been approached for comment.
