Navan man fined €300 after cannabis found hidden in car dashboard
A Navan man pleaded guilty to possession of cannabis worth €1,466 found behind his car dashboard. A separate case saw a homeless woman receive a suspended sentence for diesel theft.
Cannabis hidden behind dashboard leads to €300 fine at Trim District Court
Meathchronicle.ie reports that a 32-year-old Navan man was convicted at Trim District Court after cannabis valued at €1,466 was discovered concealed behind the dashboard of a car during a Garda search. The drugs were individually bagged in a manner consistent with sale or supply.
Darren Mulvaney, of Athlumney Wood, Navan, faced charges of possession and possession for sale or supply relating to an incident on 31st March 2025. He tendered a guilty plea and had previous convictions for drug offences.
Defence barrister Niall Gallagher told the court that Mulvaney had begun using drugs at the age of 14 and left school at 16, but was currently in employment. He had not been in further trouble since the incident and had stopped using drugs afterwards.
Mulvaney told Judge Eirinn McKiernan that he ceased drug use after being warned he would lose his family. "It is not worth it. You learn from your mistakes," he said. He explained that he had acquired the drugs pre-bagged as it was cheaper than buying them individually.
Judge McKiernan convicted Mulvaney on the lesser charge of possession and imposed a fine of €300, taking the sale or supply charge into consideration.

In a separate matter before Trim District Court, a 20-year-old Navan woman received a suspended jail term after pleading guilty to stealing diesel worth €56 from Circle K, Beechmount, Navan on 7th February 2024.
Nara Benson, with an address at Elm View, Clogherboy View, Navan, had been homeless and living out of her car at the time of the offence. She had three previous convictions for theft.
Her barrister, Paul Noctor, indicated she was willing to pay compensation, but later informed the court she had been unable to obtain the funds and sought an additional week to do so.
Judge McKiernan imposed a one-month jail sentence, suspended for 18 months.
