Medical personnel at Dublin's Mater Hospital needed security support while treating the man accused of the Parnell Square knife attacks because they were aware he allegedly stabbed a child, a detective has told the Central Criminal Court.

A garda escort was necessary when Riad Bouchaker received medical care at the Mater Hospital because clinical staff were aware he stood accused of knifing a youngster and felt uneasy, the Central Criminal Court has been told.

Detective Sergeant Padraig Cleary gave this evidence on Friday while being questioned by prosecutor Karl Finnegan SC. He explained that officers remained at the hospital throughout a four-week spell following the suspected Parnell Square blade assaults, which left one minor with catastrophic brain damage caused by haemorrhaging.

Jurors were also shown a 24-centimetre carving blade that had been collected from the location of the incident.
