The accused, a man in his late 40s, appeared before the High Court via video-link from prison. He faces charges of attempted murder and serious assault following the incident on 23 November 2023, in which a five-year-old girl and her carer were left with severe injuries. Three other children were also hurt in the attack near a school in the north inner city.

Giving evidence during a bail hearing, the garda detective stated that medical staff at the hospital where the accused was initially taken had to be given assurances about their safety while providing treatment. The court heard that the defendant had been receiving care at a Dublin hospital before being transferred to a secure medical facility within the prison system.

The detective also outlined concerns regarding the accused's potential flight risk and the safety of witnesses if bail were granted. The prosecution opposed bail, citing the seriousness of the charges and the strength of the evidence.

The accused was remanded in custody to appear before the court again at a later date. The case continues.
